Baston Coat of Arms

Descendants of John Baston & Elizabeth Thatcher married 1552 Bampton, Oxfordshire.

Fourth Generation

21. William BASTON [scrapbook] (John , John , John ) was born on 1 Mar 1631 in Bampton Oxfordshire. He was christened 1 on 27 Apr 1631 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. He was buried 2 in poss 16 Aug 1711 in St Mary's, Bampton, Oxfordshire.

William has this land record dated in 1665 3 for Hearth Tax for Bampton Oxfordshire. He has this 1673 document 4 for an identified building mark for William Baston & Susannah in Standlake, Oxfordshire Photo 5 of Black Horse, Standlake, Oxfordshire which has two identified building marks for 1673. He has this 1673 document 6 of a thesis by Sally Stradling 1979 in Black Horse, Standlake, Oxford He was left a legacy 7 in his mother Elizabeth Baston's Will 20 Apr 1687, Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire

Either William Basson born 1 March 1631, Christened 27 April 1631 to John & Elizabeth Baston (m 1626 nee Hore) or less likely, William Baston Christened 10 August 1628 to Robert.

1665 Taxed on one hearth.

Standlake "Building work by small yeoman or cottagers is commemorated by inscriptions , the Black Horse Public House (WBS 1673 for William & Susannah Baston)".

It looks as though once William took on the Black Horse at Standlake, the rest of his children weren't baptised.  We know they exist as they are mentioned in various Wills.

William married Susannah MORE, daughter of Thomas MORE and Elizabeth WIDOWES, about 1660 in probably at Shifford (all the pre 1725 registers were destroyed by damp). Susannah was christened on 6 Feb 1627 in St Mary's, Bampton, Oxfordshire. She was buried in date unknown.

Susannah has this 1673 document for William Baston & Susannah identified building mark in Standlake, Oxfordshire

Marriage Notes:

We know from the records of the Black Horse at Standlake that William's wife was a Susannah and by searching all the available Oxfordshire registers it turns out that there were very few Susannahs around at the time.  I have checked into all the available ones and by a process of elimination, this is the only Susannah that hadn't either died or married so is quite possibly the correct Susannah.  The is also a record that William's father, John fought in the Civil War under Capt Moore so it's quite possible that that is how he came to know the family of Moore.

William and Susannah had the following children.

+ 31 M i John BASTON was christened on 3 Jun 1662. He was buried in poss 14 Feb 1714.
+ 32 M ii William BASTON was christened on 17 Apr 1664. He was buried on 7 Apr 1720.
  33 M iii
Henry BASTON [scrapbook] was christened 1 on 10 Jun 1666 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. He was buried 2 on 29 Oct 1694 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxford ( TS Henry son of William).

Henry was in the as a victim of wrongful arrest court 3 on 1 Jan 1692 in Oxford Quarter Sessions.
  34 F iv
Elizabeth BASTON [scrapbook] was born on 10 Dec 1668 in Bampton Oxfordshire. She was christened 1 on 20 Dec 1668 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. She died on 29 Nov 1742 in East Hendred, Berkshire, a spinster (date of will).

Elizabeth had a will 2 on 29 Nov 1742 in East Hendred, Berkshire. Her will was probated 3 on 17 Feb 1743 in Court of Canterbury. She has this pedigree 4 this pedigree constucted from her Will dated 29 Nov 1742 in East Hendred, Berkshire.

Probably the Elizabeth who died 1742 in East Hendred originally from Bampton - see will 1742.

Died 1742 a spinster according to her will. The only burial I can find is of an Elizabeth Baston in 1745 at Stanton Harcourt "17th July 1745, Elizabeth Baston a single woman".
+ 35 F v Mary BASTON was christened on 12 Jul 1674. She was buried in poss 26 Nov 1740.
+ 36 F vi Deborah BASTON was born about 1675. She was buried on 11 Jan 1746/1747.
+ 37 M vii Thomas BASTON was born about 1678. He was buried on 27 Jul 1758.
+ 38 M viii Jonathan BASTON was born about 1680. He was buried on 2 Dec 1715.

26. Henry BASTON (John , John , John ) was born about 1620/1640 in between 1616 & 1638. He was buried in poss 5 Apr 1712 in St Mary's, Bampton, Oxfordshire, (Henery an old man of Aston).

He was left a legacy 1 in his mother Elizabeth Baston 1687 Will 20 Apr 1687, Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire

Added to family as he is mentioned in Elizabeth Basson's 1687 Will as one of her sons. There is only one child to Henry shown, and an Elizabeth, wife of Henry is shown as being buried at the same date so perhaps she died during childbirth and he never remarried.

Henry married Elizabeth? BASTON? about 1659. Elizabeth? was born about 1640. She was buried in poss 24 Mar 1660 in St Mary's, Bampton, Oxfordshire (wife of Henry).

It is possible that due to the death of Elizabeth the twins weren't baptised until 1661.

They had the following children.

  39 F i
Mary BASTON was christened on 14 Sep 1661 in St Mary's, Bampton, Oxfordshire. She died in date unknown.

28. John BASTON [scrapbook] (John , John , John ) was christened 1 on 11 Nov 1623 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxford born Aston. He was buried on 6 Apr 1695 in Bampton Church, Oxfordshire (an old man).

John has this record of his Military Service 2 on 16 Nov 1642, shown on a Muster List for Cromwell's Army. He was left a legacy 3 in his mother Elizabeth Baston's Will 20 Apr 1687, Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire

Died intestate, see his son John's Deed for the takeover of the lands late in the occupation of his father & grandfather, 13th May 1695

John married Elizabeth BASTON? about 1644. Elizabeth was born about 1620. She was buried in possibly 12 May 1677 Bampton (Elizabeth a wife).

They had the following children.
