Baston Coat of Arms

Descendants of John Baston & Elizabeth Thatcher married 1552 Bampton, Oxfordshire.

Third Generation

7. Margery BASTON [scrapbook] (John , John ) was born in Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire. She was christened 1 on 5 Jan 1589 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. She died in date unknown.

She was left a legacy 2 in her grandmother Elizabeth Baston's Will 20 Jul 1603, Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire

1604 left one bushel of barley in her grandmother, Elizabeth will.
Margery is not mentioned in the 1630 will of her father John Baston, she possibly married John Bennet as he is mentioned as a son-in-law and his children receive an inheritance, there is also a John Bennet born 1614 to a John & Mar. Bennett in Bampton.

Margery married John BENNET about 1612. John was born about 1585. He was buried on 31 May 1624 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire.

They had the following children.

  18 M i
John BENNET was christened 1 on 11 Apr 1614 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. He died in date unknown.

8. John BASTON [scrapbook] (John , John ) was born in Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire. He was christened 1 on 11 Aug 1593 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. He was buried 2 on 21 Oct 1643 in St Mary's Bampton, (John a householder).

He was left a legacy 3 in his grandmother Elizabeth Baston's Will, 20 Jul 1603, Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire His will was probated 4 in 1648 in Bampton Oxfordshire.

1604 left one bushel of barley in his grandmother, Elizabeth's will.
1648 Probate of John Baston's will, regrettably all that survives is the inventory and not the will, probate was granted to Elizabeth so Joan had died and he remarried.  This is borne out by the fact that Elizabeth herself has a will in 1689 but there is no record of a Joan will.

I suspect Joan, John's first wife had died and he remarried an Elizabeth as an Elizabeth was granted probate of his will.  There is a reference to an Elizabeth Bason who is a widow and landholder in a 1666/67 deed "An agreement betwixt Thomas Horde Esq and the Freeholders, Leaseholders and Copyholders of Aston and Cote" to which Elizabeth is one of the signatories. Since found the marriage of John Baston & Elizabeth Hore at St Clement's, Oxford in 1626.

1593 Baptised at Bampton, lived Aston.
1616 Married Jone Munkster/Kempster.
1626 Married Elizabeth Hore.
1643 Buried, St Mary's Bampton.

John married Elizabeth HORE [scrapbook], daughter of William HORE and Margaret BARTON, on 14 Apr 1626 in St Clement's, Oxford. Elizabeth was christened on 7 Sep 1601 in St Mary, Little Coxwell, Berkshire. She died in Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire. She was buried on 10 Jun 1689 in St Mary's, Bampton, Oxfordshire.

Elizabeth has this land record dated in 1662 for Agreement betwixt Thomas Horde Esq and the Freeholders, Leaseholders & Copyholders for Aston & Cote, Oxfordshire. She has this land record dated in 1665 for Hearth Tax record for Aston & Cote, Oxfordshire. She had a will on 20 Apr 1687 in Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire. She had a will inventory on 7 Aug 1689 in Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire. Her will was probated on 8 Aug 1689 in Bampton, Oxfordshire.

SURNAME: Also shown as HOARE
I think this is the correct Elizabeth of the three baptised around this time in Oxfordshire as she is the only one of the three for which a/ there is no burial and b/ no other marriage.

They had the following children.

  19 F i
Joanne (Basson) BASTON [scrapbook] was christened 1 on 23 Mar 1627/1628 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxford. She died in date unknown.

She was left a legacy 2 in her mother Elizabeth Baston's Will 20 Apr 1687, Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire
  20 F ii
Alice (Basson) BASTON [scrapbook] was christened 1 on 17 Mar 1629/1630 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxford. She was buried in date unknown in poss 19 Apr 1630 Bampton (a child buried).
+ 21 M iii William BASTON was born on 1 Mar 1631. He was buried in poss 16 Aug 1711.
  22 F iv
Elizabeth BASTON [scrapbook] was christened 1 on 1 Jun 1634 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. She died in date unknown.
  23 F v
Edie "Edith" BASTON [scrapbook] was christened 1 on 30 Oct 1636 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. She died in date unknown.

She was left a legacy 2 in her mother Elizabeth Baston's Will 20 Apr 1687, Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire

John also married Joan KEMPSTER (OR MUNKSTER) [scrapbook], daughter of Richard KEMPSTER, on 28 Oct 1616 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxford. Joan was christened on 4 Feb 1595/1596 in St Mary the Virgin, Kirtlington, Oxfordshire. She died about 1624.

The marriage entry shows "Munkster" but there are no Munkster in Oxfordshire/Berkshire and it is thought that when the register were retranscribed in the early 1700's the name may have been misread and should in fact be Kempster which is an Oxfordshire family name.

Marriage Notes:

Joan probably died early and John remarried an Elizabeth as there is a will of 1689 for Elizabeth Baston that mentions most of these children in her will.  This is also born out by the fact that a John Baston married and Elizabeth Hore in 1626 at St Clement's, Oxford, most Oxford marriages were either under age or widow/widower remarriages.

John and Joan had the following children.

  24 M vi
John BASTON [scrapbook] was christened 1 on 2 Aug 1617 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxford. He died in date unknown in or bef 1623?.
  25 F vii
Deannes BASTON [scrapbook] was christened 1 on 8 Nov 1618 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxford. She died in date unknown.
+ 26 M viii Henry BASTON was born about 1620/1640. He was buried in poss 5 Apr 1712.
  27 F ix

+ 28 M x John BASTON was christened on 11 Nov 1623. He was buried on 6 Apr 1695.

13. Isabel "Elizabeth" HILL (Agnis BASTON , John ) was christened on 5 Mar 1598 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxford (IGI). She was buried in poss 4 Nov 1681 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire (TS widow Carter).

She was left a legacy 1 in her grandmother Elizabeth Baston's Will 20 Jul 1603, Aston, Bampton, Oxfordshire

1604 Will of  her aunt, Elizabeth Baston " I give unto Elizabeth Hill one cofer by my bedhead, one payre of -u-y r---- one blacke brass pan"

Probably the Elizabeth Hill mentioned in Elizabeth Baston's 1603 Will as as she was also known as Isabel.

Elizabeth married Roger CARTER, son of Humphrey CARTER and Margery GILLETT, on 6 Nov 1621 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. Roger was christened on 14 Sep 1591 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. He was buried on 23 Jan 1664 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxford (TS a householder).

They had the following children.

  29 F i
Izabel CARTER was christened on 18 Nov 1627 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxfordshire. She was buried on 15 Mar 1651 in St Mary's Bampton, Oxford (TS a maid).
  30 F ii
