Old Tom Baston was a shepherd to Sir William Throckmorton of Buckland House, Oxfordshire.  His children were; young Tom, Billy, Ada, Phoebe, Florence, Emily and Annie.

Annie was last heard of in the Peckham area of London before the Second World War.

Florence was an extreme hypochondriac who was reputed to make herself ill by keeping wet flannels on her chest.  She eventually too to her bed and lost the use of her legs.  It is known that she married and had several children.  Last heard of in the West Drayton/Uxbridge area just after the second World War.

Emily was a spinster and a Jehovah's Witness.  She lived in Southall until she was well over eighty.  On her death, all the spare cupboard space and under bed space in her flat was found to be filled with empty gin bottles!

Phoebe was in service to the Throckmorton's and as a young woman had an illegitimate daughter by Sir William.  In consequence of this, her father Tom Baston took a stick or cudgel and inflected GBH on Sir William  He, or his family, apparently accepted that he deserved it, as no legal action was taken.  Phoebe's daughter subsequently emigrated to Newfoundland or Nova Scotia and was last heard of just after the Second world War  Phoebe herself subsequently married a water gipsy by the name of Clark and they settle in Grove (Berkshire), living to well over eighty.

Nothing is known of young Tom Baston and his subsequent life.

Billy and Tom were apparently always quarrelling and on one occasion their mother stepped between them to break up the fight and Bill actually hit her in error.  This so upset him that the falsified his age and joined the army when under age.  He is reputed to have fought at the famous battle of Omdurman.  His family was last heard of as coal merchants in the Streatham area of London.  This was before the Second World War.".

This is the last Will & Testament of me John Baston of Ardington in the County of Berks, Yeoman.
I direct all my just debts to be paid, I give and bequeath unto my great nephew John Leach of Fyfield, Berks, shepherd, all my household furniture and household requisites which shall be in my cottage at the time of my decease
AND WHEREAS I have place in the hands  of the Reverend William Hayward of Charlton in the parish of Wantage in the said County of Berks the sum three hundred and eighty pounds to be by him invested in his names in some or one of the public stocks or funds of Great Britain at interest upon trust to pay to me or my assigns the interest dividends and annual produce thereof during my life and such of the principal as I may want now .
I hereby give and bequeath unto the William Hayward his Executors Administrators and Assigns the said sum of three hundred and eighty pounds and the Stocks Funds and Securities whereon the same shall be invested with full power from time to time to vary the same Securities as he or they shall think fit
Upon trust as to forty pounds paid thereof to pay the same to the said John leach and as to three hundred pounds other part thereof Upon trust to divide the same equally amongst such of my three great grandchildren, the children of my late grand-daughter Elizabeth Brooks who shall live to attain the age of twenty one years and in case any or either of my said great grandchildren shall be the under under the age of twenty one years at the time of my decease, then I direct the said William Hayward his Executors or Administrators if he or they shall think proper to apply the whole or any part of the interest dividends and annual profits arising from the respective shares or properties to which any or either of my said great grandchildren would if of full age be entitled to under the Trusts aforesaid to and for the maintenance and education of such great grandchildren respectively .
And upon trust as to the residue thereof and also as to all the rest and residue of my monies securities for money and personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever I give and bequeath the same unto my brother Stephen Baston of Nuneham in the County of Oxford, labourer.
And I appoint my said brother and the said William Hayward Executors of this my Will in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this fifth day of November one thousand eight hundred and forty two.
