A Charles Hayward & a Thomas Hayward were convicted at Gloucester Quarter Session 1st January 1839 and sentenced to 15 years transportation on the Marquis of Hasting sailing on the 16th March 1839 to Van Dieman's Land, Australia. The ship sailed from Portsmouth, UK and arrived in Tasmania 23rd July 1839 (Tasmanian Database record No 31594). Maybe that this is how Charles arrived in Australia.."
Subsequent research shows that this Charles Hayward came from Cheltenham and was convicted with his brother Thomas who was also transported.
The youngest criminal on record was a 9-year-old boy who had stolen some clothes and a pistol. The oldest was an 82-year-old woman convicted of perjury, or lying under oath. Image.
