Owing to some disappointment in love and disagreement with his parents he
enlisted as a Private in the 89th Regiment in which he soon became a sergeant.
In an old letter from my uncle Frank Cole to my mother I extract the
following:... "I walked to Devonport to see the Parish record of funerals and
found the dear name of George Theodore Cole age 23 Sergeant of the 89th Regiment
buried Nov. 1832. The person who keeps the records (a respectable tradesman)
has promised to meet me at seven tomorrow morning to point out the spot where
his body is laid, the soul, I trust, is with Jesus rejoicing with the spirits of

3Yeoman, definition of. " The term
has changed its meaning over time. In the 13th to 15th centuries it was
principally applied to a knight's servants or retainers, though in the royal
household, the minor officials under the Chamberlain were known as the Yeomen of
the King's Chamber, Geoffrey Chaucer was once a yeoman in this sense.
Under the Tudors the use of the term was gradually widened to include the
prosperous working farmers below the rank of the gentry the class formerly known
as franklins. They worked their own land, but did not necessarily have to be
freeholders. Yeomen increasingly held their land by a variety of tenures:
freehold, copyhold* and leasehold.
The term had no legal precision but
was used informally to distinguish a farmer who was more prosperous than the
average husbandman. The wealth that was needed for a farmer to be judged a
yeoman by his neighbours varied from region to region and over time. The term
is, commonly found in the wills and inventories of the early modern period, but
during the 18th and 19th centuries both 'Yeoman' and 'husbandman' were gradually
abandoned in favour of the all embracing 'farmer'.
If the term 'yeoman'
is associated with land, or degree of land ownership, then it may have its
ancient roots in the early Anglo-Saxon rule of England or earlier (thus coming
full circle to its most likely etymological roots). In ancient times the land
was a strong indicator of social status, and wealth, since the period known as
the Dark Ages, and in terms like 'yeoman farmer' used in the 16th Century to
denote prosperous small farmers; whether land was copyhold, freehold, or a
mixture of both.
As land indicated social status, just as the term yeoman
farmer in the 1600's as an identifier of social status for small freeholders or
copyholders of land with and an indicated amount of wealth that is a determining
factor of his social standing. Not all yeomen owned land as many were indentured
or feudal servants in a castle. In earlier Anglo Saxon rule, the class of
'geneatas' would most likely be the classification a 'yeoman' in this period as
an aristocratic peasantry.
The 'yeoman' would be the connection between
royalty and nobility to the peasantry, thus a middling class of sorts in feudal
or manorial service to either the king, or a lord. Also possibly identified
within a class of libri homini (freemen) within Domesday, the 'yeoman' in
service to a king or lord would be known as serviens/sergeants, or
valet/valectus during the Norman period. There are also men known as 'socmen' or
'sokemen', usually derived from Anglian or Danish sources, equivalent in status
as 'radman', thus combining land status and servile status as equals
*Copyhold Has its origin in medieval England, Copyhold tenure was tenure of
land according to the custom of the manor, the "title deeds" being a copy of the
record of the manor court. Copyholds were gradually enfranchised (turned into
ordinary holdings of land-either freehold or 999-year leasehold) during the 19th
century. Legislation in the 1920s finally extinguished the last of them. For
further information see Manorial Law (1996) by Andrew Barsby..".

1819, confirmed John Headwall?." HISTORY OF THE DRAGOONS Light
dragoons have always been rather special troops. They were first raised in the
middle of the Eighteenth Century for reconnaissance and patrolling - in other
words scouting - but soon acquired a reputation for courage and dash in the
charge. Originally, each regiment of cavalry formed a light troop, but so
successful was the idea that whole regiments were formed. The 15th Light
Dragoons were the first ever (1759), and others quickly followed including the
Eighteenth and Nineteenth. The Thirteenth, raised as heavy dragoons (mounted
infantrymen) as early as 1715, were also converted to the light role. These
light dragoon regiments fought all over the world in the half-century that
followed, notably in India and North America. They distinguished themselves
under the Duke of Wellington in Spain and Portugal in the Napoleonic wars, and
three of them were present at the battle of Waterloo (1815).(www.army.mod.uk).
So Francis was probably injured during the Battle Of Waterloo 1815. " Royal
