Descendants of John MAY or STEVENS born 1730 in Shoreham, Kent

Second Generation

2. John MAY OR STEVENS (Jonathan ) was christened 1 9 Mar 1730 in Shoreham, Kent. He died date unknown.

The only reason I can find so far for the "Stevens or May" on his marriage to Mary Whale is that at about this time in Hadlow, Richard May was looking for heirs to his fortune which eventually went to the Barton family of Hadlow when John Barton married Jane May the daughter of Thomas May, (Richard's son) and their son Walter Barton had to assume the surname of May to inherit the fortune, this he did, becoming Walter Barton May. So perhaps he was a bit of chancer and hoped something would rub off?

John married 1 Mary WHALE [scrapbook], daughter of John WHALE and Elizabeth ASHDOWN, on 7 Oct 1760 in Leigh, Kent. Mary was born 2 4 Oct 1741 in Chiddingstone, Kent. She died date unknown.

They had the following children:

+ 3 M i Jonathan MAY was born 10 May 1761 and was buried 21 Apr 1819.
+ 4 F ii Hannah MAY was born about 1779 and died 1857 Mar qtr.
