Baston Coat of Arms

Ancestors of Adam Luke John BASTON of Andover, Hampshire, UK

Notes

512. Jonathan BASTON

1777 Mentioned in his uncle Jonathan Baston's will
1817 Mentioned in brother Francis' will (both a John & Jonathan are separately mentioned)

576. Jonathan (John) MAY OR STEVENS

Initially the only reason I found for the "Stevens or May" on his marriage to Mary Whale is that at about this time in Hadlow, Richard May was looking for heirs to his fortune which eventually went to the Barton family of Hadlow when John Barton married Jane May the daughter of Thomas May, (Richard's son) and their son Walter Barton had to assume the surname of May to inherit the fortune, this he did, becoming Walter Barton May. So perhaps he was a bit of chancer and hoped something would rub off?
I have now found a John May baptised to John May & Ann Stevens in 1733, it would appear that John & Anne married in the notorious Fleet Prison area of London which was famed for its illegal & bigamous marriages, so perhaps John/Jonathan wasn't sure of his surname or he may have been born before they married and was baptised later?
(Note: ID: Merged with a record that used the ID RIN1152>2+3.   BIRTH RITE: Another possible is Christening 9 Aug 1730, St Peter & St Paul's Church, Shoreham, Kent).

I'm still researching so if you have anything to add or correct then
please email Baston Family Genealogy

Please mention the RIN number attached to a person's name as it is very difficult for me to know for which John, William, Thomas, Edward etc you wish to have more information.

Thank you
