Little is known of Joseph who is first heard of in Wembury when married
Mary Neels in 1781, who was the base child of Jane. Mary was apprenticed to
Robert Tamblyn, the Church Warden of St Werburgh's Church, Wembury, and who
is thought to be her father. Joseph rented Avery's Tenement for 2s per year
in 1802.
His descendants were mainly Agricultural Workers and Stonemasons, and it
was these who moved from Wembury to Oreston and then to Plymouth and
onwards.
There are no Algates left in Wembury now in the male line but there are
some from the female line.
Joseph Algate was born in 1759 in Wembury. He died on 2 Nov 1841 in
Wembury.

1781 in Wembury. Mary was born in 1763 in Wembury. She died on 1 Jan 1851 in
