for by a legacy from John Marshall, a local businessman, on land given by
William Angell, the Lord of the Manor of Paris Gardens. The church, serving the
rapidly increasing population on the south side of the Thames, sank into the
Lambeth Marsh and had to be demolished. The second church, constructed on piles,
survived for 200 years until bombed in 1941. The current building was erected in
1959, paid for and owned by the Marshall's Charity. The Trustees generously
support the maintenance of the building and the cost of some of the ministry

Row, London, N1, England, microfilm X024/013. " No 438 1832 Christ Church,
Spitalfields. Mary Ann Baston of Heneage Street. Burial March 11 age 27
yrs." There was a cholera epidemic in 1832 in East London and this was
possibly the cause of Mary's death. Drainage in East London was
very poor, as indeed it was over the whole of London. The Commissioners
of Sewers, set up by Henry VIII, collected a rate and were meant to maintain the
sewers in their area. However, many of the sewers were open ditches and those
which did run underground had not always been properly surveyed so that the
course became blocked up. The worst drain was the 'Black Ditch', an open sewer
running from the parish of Christ Church Spitalfields and emptying into
Limehouse Dock. The Tower Hamlets Commissioners of Sewers had made an attempt to
drain it by diverting the flow, but this had made the stream stagnant and more
offensive. The Act for the Prevention of the Cholera Morbus came into force in
February 1832 and allowed boards to perform some compulsory cleansing of houses
for the first time, but was passed too late to have much effect on the epidemic
already in progress. Water was supplied to London by private
companies, the New River Company and the East London Water Company serving
respectively the inland and riverside parts of East London. The East London
Water Company took its water directly from the River Lea north of Bow, and
despite having recently replaced the wooden mains piping, the mortality from
cholera was very high in the area it served. Only about a third of houses were
supplied directly, most people relying on pumps in the street..

3St James' Church, Clerkenwell, London in the
1800's. " Where Jane (1816) & possibly Mary Ann (1832) Seares were Baptised.
The parish of St James, Clerkenwell, has had a long and sometimes lively
history. The springs that give it its name are mentioned in the times of Henry
II, and the parish clerks of London used to perform their mystery plays in the
neighbourhood, sometimes in the presence of royalty. About the year 1100 a
Norman baron named Jordan Briset founded a Benedictine nunnery dedicated to St
Mary, which became wealthy and influential. It had a place of pilgrimage at
Muswell Hill, and the parish kept an outlying tract of territory there until the
nineteenth century The old church, which was a medley of seventeenth and
eighteenth century bits and pieces in various styles engrafted on the remains of
the mediaeval nunnery church, presented by 1788 an appearance of picturesque and
dilapidated muddle. In that year an Act of Parliament was passed for the
rebuilding, the money to be provided by the sale of annuities. The architect was
a local man, James Carr, and he produced a building, which is pre-eminently a
preaching-house, but with carefully planned and harmonious detail. Bishop Beilby
Porteus dedicated the new church in 1792. The upper galleries were added in 1822
for the children of the Sunday-School, founded in 1807 and still flourishing;
the back parts of the upper galleries were for the use of the poor. Sir Arthur
Blomfield restored the church and rearranged the ground floor in 1882.
W.P.Griffith had restored the tower and spire in 1849, but this work was also
very well done. Carr's design is clearly influenced by Wren and Gibbs.". "Where

5St Giles Church, Cripplegate, London about
1830. " Where Jane Sears married Henry Atkinson in 1833 St. Giles’ is
one of the few remaining medieval churches in the City of London and is at the
heart of the Barbican development. It is said that there has been a church on
this spot for a thousand years. We know nothing about the early Saxon church,
which was probably a little chantry or chapel made of wattle and daub. In 1090 a
Norman church stood on this site, built by Alfune who afterwards assisted Rahere
in building the neighbouring church of St Bartholomew the Great. Sometime during
the Middle Ages, the Church was dedicated to St. Giles, the patron saint of
beggars and cripples. The word "Cripplegate" has nothing to do with
cripples, although no doubt there would have been plenty of cripples by the
Cripplegate, wanting alms from travellers as they entered and left the City. The
word comes from the Anglo-Saxon "cruplegate" which means a covered way or tunnel
which ran from the town gate of Cripplegate to the Barbican, a fortified
watchtower on the City wall.". Image.

Bissett son of the above who departed this life January 9th 1869 aged 34 years.

15th aged 79 years. Her end was in peace. Also Mr Samuel. Bissett husband
of the last named who departed this life November 24th 1880 in the 87th year of
his age." Note by Dr Frances Green. I knew that a lot of Bissetts were
buried in Little Ilford Cemetery (now City of London Cemetery) but was unable to
find the grave plot/stone when I first visited (early August 2010). Fortunately,
with the assistance of a very helpful person there, it was identified that the
headstone had become unstable some decades previously, and had been laid flat.
Over the years the grave had sunk into the ground and had become covered in
earth/grass. This was temporarily removed for me to allow taking of photographs
(in B&W as slightly easier to read) and has now been filled in again. From
family records, I understand more Bissetts are interred in this plot than are
named on headstone (they may be named on afurther stone now hidden beneath
headstone?). These are: Rosa Adelaide Bissett (d. 1869), Amy Bissett (d.1870),
Rosalind Bissett (d.1908),James George Bissett (d. 1908), Elizabeth Bissett (d.
1924) and Samuel James Bissett (d.1930). Image.

originally read in February 1824 (3 times) but the marriage did not take place,
Samuel probably wasn't available and still at sea. The Banns were re-read 12th,
