15Occupation or Trade of "Cordwainer" and
"Boot Laster". " What Is A CORDWAINER And What Is Their Background?
The term "Cordwainer" is an Anglicization of the French word cordonnier,
introduced into our language after the Norman invasion of England in 1066. The
word itself is derived from the city of Cordoba, in the south of Spain, a
stronghold of the mighty Omeyyad Kalifs until its fall in the 12th century.
Moorish Cordoba was celebrated for two staple trades in the early Middle Ages,
silversmithing and the production of cordouan (cordovan) leather, called
"cordwain" in England. Originally made from the skin of the Musoli goat, then
found in Corsica, Sardinia, and elsewhere, this leather was "tawed" with alum
after a method supposedly known only to the Moors. English Crusaders brought
home much plunder and loot, including the finest leather the English shoemakers
had ever seen. Gradually cordouan, or cordovan leather became the material most
in demand for the finest footwear in all of Europe. The English term
cordwainer, meaning shoemaker, first appears in 1100. By the late 13th century a
distinction grew in England between Cordwainers proper, called alutari, who used
only alum "tawed" cordwain, and another class of shoemakers called basanarii,
who employed an inferior "tanned" sheepskin which was prohibited for footwear
apart from long boots. Since this period the term cordouan, or cordovan leather,
has been applied to several varieties of leather. Today cordovan leather is a
"vegetable tanned" horse "shell", and like the Medieval cordwain is used only
for the highest quality shoes. Since the Middle Ages the title of
Cordwainer has been selected by the shoemakers themselves, and used rather
loosely; however, generally it always refers to a certain class of shoe and
boot- makers. The first English guild of shoemakers who called themselves
"Cordwainers" was founded at Oxford in 1131. "Cordwainers" was also the
choice of the London shoemakers, who had organized a guild before 1160, and the
Worshipful Company of Cordwainers has likewise used this title since receiving
their first Ordinances in 1272. Cordwainer" not "Cobbler" One
distinction preserved by Cordwainers since the earliest times is, that a
Cordwainer works only with new leather, where a Cobbler works with old. Cobblers
have always been repairers, frequently prohibited by law from actually making
shoes. Even going so far as to collect worn-out footwear, cut it apart, and
remanufacture cheap shoes entirely from salvaged leather, Cobblers have
contended with Cordwainers since at least the Middle Ages. In 16th century
London the Cordwainers solved their conflicts with the Cobblers of that city by
placing them under the powerful authority of the Cordwainer's guild, thus
merging with them. Whenever shoemakers have organized, they have shown a
clear preference for the title "Cordwainer," conscious of the distinguished
history and tradition it conveys. Today's Cordwainer is no exception. The
current generation of boot and shoemakers includes a growing number of
self-employed tradesmen and women, who having largely adopted early hand-sewn
techniques supplemented by only a few simple machines out of economic necessity,
continue to practice the traditional skills established centuries ago. In the
face of declining domestic footwear production every year, it can be easily said
that the true future of this trade lays in its past, and is being insured by the
skilled hands of these modern Cordwainers. BOOT LASTER A person who
makes a shoemaker's model for shaping or repairing a boot.".

2St James' Church, Clerkenwell, London in the
1800's. " Where Jane (1816) & possibly Mary Ann (1832) Seares were Baptised.
The parish of St James, Clerkenwell, has had a long and sometimes lively
history. The springs that give it its name are mentioned in the times of Henry
II, and the parish clerks of London used to perform their mystery plays in the
neighbourhood, sometimes in the presence of royalty. About the year 1100 a
Norman baron named Jordan Briset founded a Benedictine nunnery dedicated to St
Mary, which became wealthy and influential. It had a place of pilgrimage at
Muswell Hill, and the parish kept an outlying tract of territory there until the
nineteenth century The old church, which was a medley of seventeenth and
eighteenth century bits and pieces in various styles engrafted on the remains of
the mediaeval nunnery church, presented by 1788 an appearance of picturesque and
dilapidated muddle. In that year an Act of Parliament was passed for the
rebuilding, the money to be provided by the sale of annuities. The architect was
a local man, James Carr, and he produced a building, which is pre-eminently a
preaching-house, but with carefully planned and harmonious detail. Bishop Beilby
Porteus dedicated the new church in 1792. The upper galleries were added in 1822
for the children of the Sunday-School, founded in 1807 and still flourishing;
the back parts of the upper galleries were for the use of the poor. Sir Arthur
Blomfield restored the church and rearranged the ground floor in 1882.
W.P.Griffith had restored the tower and spire in 1849, but this work was also
very well done. Carr's design is clearly influenced by Wren and Gibbs.".

8William, Harry (Henry) & Emma Baston -
rememberances, Rose O'Gorman (nee Hales) 8th August 2010. " Hi Carol, I
came back from the UK with a few photos that might be of interest. One is of my
Mum's sister my Aunt May taken when she was approximately 20 years. And taken in
the same studio that many of the other photos were taken in., which was the
studio of: T.S. Robinson, photographer, 185 and 187 High Street, HOMERTON, E.9.
The other photo is one that was taken of Sarah Baston in old age, as my Mum
would have remembered her. (8.1 cm x 5.3 cm Also I did have a chat to my
Mum about the uncles and aunts and she started talking about Tudor Grove. She
said that the house where Emma, Will and Harry lived in was half way down the
Grove and was quite a Grand large house that had eight steps leading up to the
doorway. It was two stories with a large attic upstairs, and a place that my Mum
went into many times. At the end of the row was a tiny cottage where my Mum's
Gran Alice lived with her youngest son Cyril. She said that she rembered an
Aunt Liz, but not that well. But did remember that most people called her
Lilibet. She also thinks that she died when she was youngish, but could not be
100% about it, but did not think that she married. she also told me a little
about the characters of Will and Harry. Will was a very serious person who
rarely smiled, was quite rotund and much shorter in stature than Harry. Harry
was tall, but always had a bad leg, but despite that a real character who was
always funny and loved to make everyone laugh. My Mum was very fond of him.
Also I thought you might like the photographer details that are on the back
of the photo that I said my Mum said was of a younger Sarah Baston (Noble). It
is J.Fisher and co, 174, Edware Road W and 54 Mare Street, Hackney, N.E.

Cynanche: n. 1. (Med.) Any disease of the tonsils, throat, or windpipe,
attended with inflammation, swelling, and difficulty of breathing and
swallowing. Trachealis: is a discontinuous layer of smooth muscle
spanning the transverse, posterior deficiency of the C-shaped cartilages within
the trachea. The body of the muscle is rich in fibroelastic tissue to aid with
elastic recoil. When coughing, trachealis constricts prior to the relaxation of
the vocal cords. This increases the pressure within the trachea to make the
cough more explosive. Image.

9William, Harry (Henry) & Emma Baston -
rememberances, Rose O'Gorman (nee Hales) 8th August 2010.

6Appleby Street, Shoreditch, London, courtesy
John Munday 2008. " Dear Carol Three pictures attached, number 30 is
the fifth house down (my Grandparents moved into the house in the early 1920’s),
the first two houses on the left are numbers 38 and 36 and a lamppost stands
outside number 28, in the second picture the second car stands outside number
30. The third picture was taken outside No 30 for the film; it was for a
photograph that the characters come across after the father died and was of the
two parents and their children taken during WW2. They spent nearly a day doing
the house up for one photograph, the scene where they find the photo lasted just
seconds in the film. The father was played by Bernard Lee who played ‘M’ in the
James Bond films, the mother Doris Hare played the Mother in ‘On the Buses’.
Despite being directed by Basil Dearden, the film was poor but it captured the
street as it was at the time, it was shown on TV many times and I have a copy so
I have a permanent reminder of the street I was brought up in! Of the
street, many East Londoners lay claim to links with the Kray’s but many are
flights of fancy, two of the houses shown, however, have links. The woman who
was both Aunt and Godmother to Reggie Kray’s first wife Frances lived at number
34 and before my time the teenage Charlie Kray used to go out with the daughter
of our neighbours at number 32. Charlie’s best friend in those days before
villainy set in was a family friend, Bert Vickery who lived opposite and
eventually retired to Cornwall. We remained in touch with regular phone calls
until he died earlier this year (his war memoirs are on the BBC’s Peoples War
website and are worth a read). So there you have it 30, 32 and 34 Appleby
Street three houses with a tenuous link to both James Bond and the Krays!
Regards, John Munday.". Image.
