14Sarah Noble in later life. "
[30/07/2010] Hi Carol, I came back from the UK with a few photos that might be
of interest. One is of my Mum's sister my Aunt May taken when she was
approximately 20 years. And taken in the same studio that many of the other
photos were taken in., which was the studio of: T.S. Robinson, photographer, 185
and 187 High Street, HOMERTON, E.9. The other photo is one that was taken of
Sarah Baston in old age, as my Mum would have remembered her. Rosemary
O'Gorman: Also I did have a chat to my Mum about the uncles and aunts and she
started talking about Tudor Grove. She said that the house where Emma, Will and
Harry lived in was half way down the Grove and was quite a Grand large house
that had eight steps leading up to the doorway. It was two stories with a large
attic upstairs, and a place that my Mum went into many times. At the end of the
row was a tiny cottage where my Mum's Gran Alice lived with her youngest son
Cyril. She said that she rembered an Aunt Liz, but not that well. But did
remember that most people called her Lilibet. She also thinks that she died when
she was youngish, but could not be 100% about it, but did not think that she
married. she also told me a little about the characters of Will and Harry. Will
was a very serious person who rarely smiled, was quite rotund and much shorter
in stature than Harry. Harry was tall, but always had a bad leg, but despite
that a real character who was always funny and loved to make everyone laugh. My
Mum was very fond of him. Also I thought you might like the photographer
details that are on the back of the photo that I said my Mum said was of a
younger Sarah Baston (Noble). It is J.Fisher and co, 174, Edware Road W and 54
Mare Street, Hackney, . Rosemary O'Gorman: Speak to you soon, Rose x.".

London Hospital Arthur William Baston, male age 5 years son of Thomas Baston,
Boot Laster, 16 Victoria Grove, Hackney Cause: Acute Nephritis Uraemia,
Informant: M Higgins, Present at death London Hospital, Whitechapel 25th October
1897." Acute Nephritis. The nephritic syndrome is the result of acute
inflammation of the glomeruli, ... haematuria; uraemia; oedema, which is usually
facial. Nephritis refers to an inflammation of the kidneys. It is a serious
condition and may be either acute or chronic. Most often this disease strikes in
childhood or adolescence. It can become progressively worse and result in death,
if not treated properly at the initial stage. Other symptoms are puffiness in
the face, and swelling of the feet and ankles. In the chronic stages, the
patient passes large amounts of albumin in the urine. Later, there may be rise
in blood pressure and. the patient may develop uraemia. Nephritis: is
inflammation of the kidney. The word comes from the Greek nephro- meaning "of
the kidney" and -itis meaning "inflammation". The two most common causes of
nephritis are infection or an auto-immune process. Uremia: is a toxic
condition resulting from renal failure, when kidney function is compromised and
urea, a waste product normally excreted in the urine, is retained in the blood.
Uremia can lead to disturbances in the platelets and hypersomnia, among other
effects. Image.

4Albert Bowker 1898 Islington, London
Historry. " ALBERT BOWKER FAMILY HISTORY Version 4 02 July 2005
1.1 ALBERT BOWKER Albert Bowker was born 21 June 1898 at 10 Andover
Road Islington Wife Alice stated that his first job was with a button maker.
By 1912 he was an apprentice type caster with A J Pillar Ltd of Wedmore Street,
where he met his lifelong pal Jack Stannard. When that firm closed in October
1915 it is thought he moved with Jack to work in the electrical department of
Keith Blackman Ltd., Holloway Road. He enlisted for the Army in August
1917, joining up soon after with the Royal Garrison Artillery and training as a
signalman. In Britain he was based at Avington Park near Winchester, Scraedon
Fort, Antony; and possibly Fort Belvedere in Windsor Great Park. Little is
known of his movements thereafter, but it is surmised that he was sent abroad
some time during 1918, probably to the Near or Middle East; we have photos of
him clearly dressed for a hot climate. It is certain that he was in
Constantinople by August 1919 with 180 Heavy Battery RGA, 61 Brigade. This
Battery was largely disbanded in late August 1919. Albert travelled home in
November 1919 via Marseille, for demobilisation. After leaving the Army
it is thought that he then resumed work with Blackman's. By 1921 Albert was
Secretary of the Norlon Athletic Club (football team). In August 1924 he
rejected a job opportunity as a type caster in Sydney Australia. That same
month he was living away from home, in Brighton. Albert & Alice became
engaged on Christmas Day 1925 and marriage followed exactly one year later at
St Paul's Church, Upper Holloway. (Alice was born 12 Aug 1904 in East Dulwich,
daughter of Ernest How and Edith Maud nee Rayner.) Albert was signatory
in 1927 to the Rules of the Amalgamated Type Founders Trade Society; he joined
the TGWU in 1931. In 1927 Albert became a milkman with the London Co-operative
Soc. At the outbreak of WW2 in September 1939, Alice was evacuated to Luton
with the children. Albert remained in London until late in 1940, when moving to
Luton, he took work with ball-bearing manufacturer SKF. Albert and Alice
had four children: Nelson Ernest Edwin Thomas ('Bob') born 2 Mar 1931; Sylvia
Edith Louisa born 23 Mar 1934 at 77a Highgate Hill (Whittington Hospital),
Tufnell Islington; Daphne Helen born 12 Apr 1937 and Spencer Robert William
born 13 May 1945. Albert died at St Mary's Hospital Luton on 23 April
1991 of broncho-pneumonia, immobility, cerebro-vascular accident and
osteo-arthritis. His wife Alice died at Luton & Dunstable Hospital on 31 Aug
1997. 1.2 Albert's Father: Edwin Bowker Junior Edwin Jr was born in
Dartmoor Prison, Princeton, Lidford, Devon on 12 Jul 1860. He was also known as
Edward and referred to himself thus. He was a pupil at the St John's School in
Upper Holloway. His father Edwin was a warder at Dartmoor Prison. On
Christmas Day 1880, then a labourer, he married Louisa Waters, spinster, aged
19, both of 10 Shadwell Road (later known as Cornwallis Rd). Louisa's father
was William Sturland (sic - actually Stirling) Waters, a solicitor's clerk. The
witnesses were Eleanor Thomas and Mr Waters. Edwin was a bricklayer by
trade in 1884, a railway porter in 1892, a labourer in 1910 and a tram car
washer in 1915. In 1926 he was a builder's handyman. Edwin died 1936 aged 76.
Edwin & Louisa had 9 or 10 children of whom not all details are known. They
included Alice born 1883? Edwin Victor ("Ted") born 16 Aug 1884, Frederick
Henry and Henry, twins born 1890. Thomas John ("Tom") born 15 Aug 1892, Walter
born 1899/1900 GRO birth ref 1901 Q3 Islington ref 1b 231 and ALBERT born 21 Jun
1898 birth ref in GRO 1898 Q3 Islington 1b 205. There was also a Mabel and
possibly a Laura. Walter married Kathleen E Connell at Christmas 1918 GRO
ref 1918 Q4 Islington ref 1b 772. Louisa died at age 71 on 16 Feb 1935, at
77a Highgate Hill, of myocardial degeneration and chronic bronchitis.
1.3 Albert's Grandfather: Edwin Bowker Senior Edwin Sr was born in
1822, bap at Battersea on 28 Apr 1822. As a warder living at Charlton Street,
Marylebone he eventually married at the age of 36, Ann Purkiss, 33, spinster of
Trinity District, on 10 Jul 1858. Ann, daughter of Richard, a bailiff, was
born in c1825 at Dunmow Essex. His father is shown as John 'gentleman' (i.e. a
man of property) in the marriage certificate. In the 1861 Census living at
Lydford Devon is Edwin Bowker b Battersea c1822/3; wife Ann b Dunmow Essex
c1828; and son Edwin b 1860 at Princetown. Edwin was a prison warder in
Marylebone by 1858/60 and may have served at Pentonville before being
transferred to Dartmoor Prison, Princeton, where his eldest son EDWIN Jr was
born on Jul 1860. In 1864 he was living at 65 Wellington St Holloway and worked
as a warder at Holloway Prison. Edwin Sr was later described as a coachman. He
had at least one other son Henry, who was 4 years younger than Edwin Jr; also
possibly a son David. 1.4 Albert's Great Grandfather: John Bowker Born
c 1790 in Battersea, John lived in Clapham. He married Elizabeth possibly in
1820. They probably moved to Clapham some time between 1830 and 1833 and John
was a corn merchant (?) or cow keeper (?)* there by 1851. Intriguingly he is
described in his son's 1822 birth certificate as a 'Gentleman' ie a man of
property. * The Census sheet is barely legible: but with the evidence
of the 1861 Census his probable occupation is 'cowkeeper'. Based on IGI
information they may have had up to 12 children: Their eldest son EDWIN Sr was
bap 28 Apr 1822. Joseph was bap 6 Aug 1826. Samuel was bap on 9 Dec 1827.
John and David were bap 7 Apr 1830, along with Frederick, Henry, James and
Emma. Alfred and Thomas, were born in Clapham (1834 and 1835 respectively) and
baptised together on 21 Oct 1835. Three girls were named Elizabeth, Emma and
Jane Sarah. Jane Sarah was bap 29 Jun 1823, Elizabeth on 16 Feb 1825. All the
children were baptised at St Mary's Battersea - possibly John's home church. (
Some children probably died in infancy. ) The 1861 Census shows living at
6 Mansel Villas, Wimbledon, reg district Kingston:- John Bowker 71 b
Battersea c1790, retired cowkeeper; wife Elizabeth 69, b Battersea c1792; and
dr Jane Sarah Bowker 36, b c1825 Battersea. In the 1871 Census at
Theobalds House, Private Road, St Mary Lambeth are: John Bowker 81, gardener;
Elizabeth 79, housekeeper; and Jane S 43, charwoman. The GRO reveals the
death of a John Bowker aged 83 reg 1874 Q3 Lambeth 1d 308. This looks a likely
reference. 1.5 Earlier Bowkers - relationship not proven (IGI
information) John son of John and Elizabeth Bowker was bap 18 Feb 1772 at
St James Paddington. Richard son of John and Elizabeth Bowker was bap on
27 May 1775 at St James Paddington. James son of James and Ann Bowker was
bap on 18 Feb 1810 at St Mary's Lambeth. John son of James and Ann Bowker
was bap on 31 Jan 1813 at St Mary's Lambeth. Thomas William son of James
Wm & Ann Maria Bowker bap 24 Sep 1854 at St Mary's Battersea. James
Frederick son of James Wm & Ann Maria Bowker bap 16 Mar 1856 at St Mary's
Battersea.".
