Baston Coat of Arms

Descendants of Richard & Martha (Shephard) Baston of Bampton, Oxfordshire

This one is a bit of a conundrum as he just suddenly appeared in the Bampton registers. There is not any mention in any of the dozen or so Wills for the Bampton Bastons of a Richard Baston so we can only assume he has come into the area from somewhere else. The most likely root is from the Burson/Barsons of Shipton under Wychwood, where Richard is a very common name or he may have even come from outside of Oxfordshire. In later registers, outsiders are noted in the register as a "sojourner" which means a traveller and there are a couple of instances in the Bampton registers of this happening and in one case, the couple seemed to have stayed in the area.  This is the other family which had descendants who ended up in Cumnor, Berkshire.
